I've just purchased a Trek 1.7 with one of these on the rear. My first ride to work and back resulted in a flat, much like the original post a thin sliver of metal had penetrated just enough for a pinhole but wouldn't really be felt by running a finger around the tyre carcass.

Dave, I had no problem with the rubber. The tires were actually kind of fast, and seemed to handle okay. It's just that they were flat prone. They apparently didn't have enough protection against punctures. I am currently riding Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase tires, and I haven't had a single flat with them.

I had multiple flats just as in the original post. It turned out to be a strand of metal belt protruding through the inside of the casing. I placed some cotten reinforce (athletic) tape over the metal and have had no problems since.

I've just bought a Hutchinson Quartz tyre for the rear of my bike. The tyre on there at the moment is a Hutchinson Excel. I fitted the later in November, and have had NO punctures so far, not one! This tyre is worn out now, is is no longer made.

I have been riding the H's Quartz for my trainers and have had relatively fewer flats than the Kenda Kontenders I had been riding previously. I have been happy with these tires - I find that rolling resistance is quite good at this price point.

I am glad you are having luck with yours. I installed the Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase tires. I only got one or two rides in before winter set in. But no flats with them so far. I am looking forward to Spring.

I found the above review interesting as I have had the exact opposite experience with Hutchinson Quartz tires. I rode one set of Quartz tires for the past two seasons on my training wheels and was so impressed by the long wear and lack of flats (two total in that time) that I replaced them with another set of Quartz tires this fall. I do not know what accounts for the difference in my experience and Rob's, but it is certainly a stark one.
